The skin is the body's largest organ and our first barrier against the outside world. Here is how it renews itself and some simple ways to look after it, inside and out.

How the skin renews itself

The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is constantly renewed from cells at its base. These cells, called keratinocytes, move up to the surface over roughly a month before being shed. This cycle helps keep the skin's barrier intact and its appearance fresh. With age and external factors, renewal can slow down, and dead cells may build up – leaving the complexion looking dull.

Looking after your skin through the seasons

Summer sun, sea and sand can leave skin feeling dry; in winter, cold wind, pollution and central heating can do the same. A few simple steps help:

  • Gentle cleansing: use a soap-free cleanser and keep showers short and not too hot.
  • Moisturise: apply a cream, balm or oil after showering, while the skin is still slightly damp.
  • Protect: use sunscreen every day when the UV index is moderate or above.
  • Evening routine: cleanse gently and moisturise before bed.

From the inside

A varied, balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and healthy fats, plus enough water and sleep, is the foundation for healthy-looking skin. Some nutrients have authorised claims for the skin: biotin, niacin, riboflavin, vitamin A and zinc contribute to the maintenance of normal skin, and vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin.

Mico-Repair

Mico-Repair is a facial serum formulated with organic Reishi and Cordyceps extracts and other natural ingredients. Its lightweight texture absorbs quickly to moisturise the skin and help it look smooth and even.

Cosmetic products are intended for external use only. If you have a persistent skin condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
